First off I want to thank HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing (U.S. & Canada) as well as NetGalley for inviting me to read and review it as well as helping me find a new author to keep a watch out for because with out them I might not have discovered her at all. And I'm so glad I did because man did this book play with my mind and had me question stuff I thought I know about the main character  Kelly and I totally agree when they say its  Fatal Attraction meet up, if you ever seen that movie then you probably know what I mean. Because there was times I thought Kelly was just out of her mind and that she was making things up. And there was times I thought why wasn't her friends and her husband happy that she had a friend but then that thought or whisper would come back what if her friend isn't real. As for the story itself the author  wrote a tightly woven plot, twists I never saw coming, and characters so sharply drawn,that I also though man what if this was a movie and they had the right people playing the parts now that is a movie I would watch . And after reading this I can't wait to see what else she comes up with.

Charles Rosenberg is the author of the legal thriller Death on a High Floor and its sequels. The
credited legal consultant to the TV shows LA Law, Boston Legal, The Practice, and The Paper

Simpson criminal and civil trials. He teaches as an adjunct law professor at Loyola Law School
and has also taught at UCLA, Pepperdine and Southwestern law schools. He practices law in

Would I recommend it ? Yes

Would I read more by this author? It would depend on the story 

First off I want to thank the publisher St.Martin's Press as well as the author and NetGalley for inviting me to read and review this. And second how much surprised I was with how much I liked this book because to tell the tell I wasn't sure if I was actually going to like it but once I started reading it I couldn't stop because the author had away of telling her story that it was like it came to life right off the page the page and instead of reading a book you was watching a movie about identity and survival.And surviving most of WWII in Paris and what their time at the camps was like and after they was free . Its told in two different  periods that you get a feel for both of them. Its also about family and what that means. And how strong you can be when you need to be.

Charlotte spotted the letter as soon as she stepped into
her office. There was no reason it should have caught her
eye. The desk was littered with papers and envelopes.
Stacks of manuscripts and books filled the shelves of
the small cubicle and spilled over onto the two chairs.
Certainly the airmail envelope didn’t make it stand out.
Most of the books she published were American editions
of European works, and a good deal of her mail arrived
in those tissue-thin blue envelopes. The only explanation
for its attracting her attention was that she’d already gone
through her morning mail and the afternoon delivery
hadn’t yet arrived. Perhaps the letter had gone to another
editor by mistake, and he or she had left it on Charlotte’s

desk while she was upstairs in the art department. Or
perhaps the mailroom had overlooked it in the morning
sorting.
Gibbon & Field was a prestigious publishing house,
but a certain loucheness lurked behind the scenes. That
was the fault of Horace Field, the publisher. He was too
forgiving, or perhaps only cannily manipulative. She’d had
her earliest inkling of the trait the first Christmas after she’d
come to work at the house. Leaving the office one evening
at the same time, she and Horace had entered the elevator
together to find a young man from the production depart-
ment struggling to balance two or three oversize art books
and several of a more conventional trim size. When he saw
Horace, he colored an unhappy Christmas red.
“I see you’ve taken our ads to heart, Seth,” Horace said.
“‘There’s a book for everyone on your Christmas list.’”
The young man turned a deeper red and shot out of
the elevator as soon as the doors opened. That was un-
usual. The staff usually deferred to Horace getting on and
off elevators, and everywhere else.
“Are you going to take the books out of his salary?”
she’d asked as they’d followed him across the lobby.
“Not on your life.”
“It would teach him a lesson.”
“The only lesson I want to teach him, Charlie, is to
work his tail off for the greater glory of G&F.”

“And you think encouraging him to walk out the door
with an armful of purloined books will do that?”
“I think the next time he asks for a raise and doesn’t
get it, he’ll remember all the books he’s filched and feel
guilty, or at least compensated. Same with the expense
accounts the editors and travelers turn in. They think
they’re stealing me blind, but a guilty conscience breeds
contrition. Maybe even loyalty. They feel they owe the
house something in return. That’s why I worry about you.
Those expense accounts you file are a travesty. If the other
editors get wind of them, they’ll never forgive you for
spoiling the game.”
Horace’s philosophy permeated the entire publishing
house from the grand larceny of the production depart-
ment, run by a man rumored to have ties to the Mafia,
to the petty pilfering and general slacking off of the mail-
room. That must be why the letter had been delivered
late. And the timing was the only reason she noticed it. It
had nothing to do with a sixth sense, in which she defi-
nitely did not believe.
She sat behind the desk and picked up the envelope.
Her name and the G&F address were written, not typed.
The handwriting wasn’t familiar. There was no return ad-
dress on the upper left-hand corner. She turned it over.
As soon as she saw the name, she realized why she hadn’t
recognized the handwriting. When had they put anything

in writing? No, that wasn’t true. He’d written her once,
a year or so after the end of the war. The letter had taken
months to wind its way through the Drancy records and
the various agencies to reach her in New York. She’d
taken solace in that. He didn’t know where she was, and
he was still in Germany. She’d never answered that letter.
The return address on this one was Bogotá, Colombia. So
he’d got out after all. She was glad. She was also relieved.
South America was still a long distance away.
What troubled her was not where he was but that
now he knew where she was. She’d thought she’d been
so careful. Neither her address nor her telephone num-
ber was listed in the book. The people who had tried to
help her settle into her new life—social workers and do-
gooders from various refugee organizations; her colleagues
here and at other publishing houses; Horace Field’s wife,
Hannah—had found the omission foolish and antisocial.
“How do you expect to make a life for yourself in a new
country,” Hannah had asked, “if no one can find you?”
Charlotte hadn’t argued with her. She’d merely gone on
paying the small fee to be unlisted. Gradually Hannah
and everyone else had stopped asking and chalked it up
to what she’d been through. No one, including Hannah,
knew what that was, but that didn’t stop them from spec-
ulating.
She wasn’t much easier to find in the office, though
apparently he’d managed. Her name didn’t appear in
the list of editors that ran down the left-hand side of the
company stationery. Most publishing houses didn’t list
editors on the stationery but that was another of Horace
Field’s peculiar indulgences. A year after she’d come to
work at G&F, he’d asked if she wanted to be included.
“Think of it as a sop,” he’d said.
“A sop?” She spoke four languages, could read two
others, and had taken her degree at the Sorbonne in
English literature, but in those days she was still having
trouble with some American slang.
“Compensation for the slave wages we pay you.”
“At least you didn’t suggest I make up the difference by
stealing books,” she’d said, and added that she didn’t want
her name on the stationery but thanked him all the same.
Nonetheless, despite her absence in the phone book
and on the company stationery, her name did occasion-
ally turn up in acknowledgments in the books she worked
on. And my gratitude to Charlotte Foret for steering
my ves- sel safely through the turbulent waters of
American publish- ing. My thanks to Charlotte
Foret, who first saw that a book about the Dutch
Golden Age written by a Dutchman would appeal
to American audiences. The question was how he’d
managed to get his hands on a US edition in Europe, or
now South America. The various consulates had libraries to
spread the American gospel among the local populations,
but the books she published rarely spread the American
gospel. Nonetheless, he must have found one. Or else
he’d tracked her down through a refugee agency. Once
in America, she’d distanced herself from the émigré or
immigrant or refugee—choose your term—groups, but
she’d had to file the usual papers and obtain the
necessary documents to get here. She was traceable.

First off I want to thank Harlequin Intrigue for inviting me to read and review this book, because so far they've never let me down when it comes to their Suspense romance , and every time I pick up one of their books I tend to get lost in their stories as well as in their characters . And the same can be said about this one. Right from the start the story the story had me hooked and the characters themselves became some of my all time favorite ones. I loved how close Eli and his family was , how they was there for each others back when ever they needed help. As for Ashlyn herself  I loved how she was strong and would do anything to keep her daughter safe, and how she came to realize that it wasn't Eli fault that her best friend was killed . As for the story  itself here is what I loved about  how it was an intense, fast-paced read that grabbed my attention from the very first page and didn't let go until the end. There was plenty of drama, action, and suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat, and after reading it I realized that I wanted to read more books by this author .

Ashlyn knew it would take more luck to pin Dominick down on that. Especially if he had in-deed
hired those gunmen.
As soon as Kellan walked out, Eli took hold of her hand and moved her out of the doorway. Out
of view from the windows, too. She hadn’t needed a reminder of the danger, but that gave her one any-
way.
“There are too many puzzle pieces,” she said. “In the meantime, you and I—maybe Cora,
too—are in the crosshairs of a killer.”
He didn’t argue with her. Couldn’t. Because it was true, a frustration that they both felt. That
frustration was in every muscle of his body when he pulled her into his arms. As he’d done in the
kitchen, he brushed a kiss on the top of her head. A kiss of comfort.
And it worked.
Ashlyn could practically feel some of the tension slide right out of her. Of course, the heat came
in its place. No surprise there. She’d been dealing with it for much too long.
He pulled back just a little and looked down at her with those smoky gray eyes. They weren’t
stormy now but had some of the same fire that she was certain was in her own.
“Yeah,” he said as if he’d known exactly what she was thinking—and feeling. “If we were still in
high school, I would just coax you into taking a trip out to my truck. That won’t work this time, though.”
“No.” Since he could be dangerous. And also since sex should be the last thing on their minds.
But Ashlyn wanted to make this moment a little lighter than spelling out those reminders. “Because
we’re sensible adults now.”
The corner of his mouth lifted, causing a dimple to flash in his cheek. Yes, a dimple. It was
another weapon in the arsenal of Eli Slater, hot cowboy. But the smile didn’t last long.
“Soon, we’re going to have a brief talk about this,” Eli drawled, his voice all smoke and heat.
“And then we’ll deal with it. I’ve got some ideas as to how we can do that.”
Now she smiled, and even though she figured it was a mistake, Ashlyn brushed her mouth over
his. Again, not a full-fledged kiss, but it could have qualified as foreplay. Short foreplay.

For a first book by a new author , she's  off to a great  start with this series, from the very start it had me hooked and I had to know what happened next . And I'm so glad that I requested as soon as I saw it on Netgalley , it was the title that made it want to get it as well as the cover. And the characters themselves was great as well but my favorite character is Mackenzie. The story line was wrote in a way that once you started reading it had you hook, line and sinker.That no matter how hard you tried to put down the book you just couldn't , because  of suspense, secrets, crime, lies, secrets, friendship and the twist and turns that came at you , and as your  setting at the edge of your set you wounder what else could go wrong, with that said I want to thank NetGalley for letting me read and review it.

While it it slow though out the book for some unknown reasons I ended up liking it a lot more then I thought I would because of it, in fact the pacing helped in a lot of reasons and to name a few  it helped bring the places and descriptions as well as the characters to life, and it even give it the feeling like it was one of my  old detective books or movies that I love t read and watch.Another thing is that the main character was a former-paleontology-student turned private-detective which is way different then anything I've read because even in the old detective stories the main character was a cop of some shorts or even a soldier that become came a detective. And while it was slow like I said before it still had everything that make a great mystery which is Drama, mystery, fights, and plot twists . With that said I want to say think you the publisher as well as the author and Netgalley for letting me read and review it.

This is the first time I've read this author and she's off to a get start with me, one of the things I loved about this book was the close Brand was to his family and the ones that worked for him so much so that they was family themselves, and the love he and his brothers had for land , history and town . Another thing I loved was how even through it was a slow burning romance it worked for the story and took non thing away from it, in fact it helped bring the story to life and which give each character time to shine and that you got to know them better. As for the main characters themselves I loved them , loved how hard working Brand was and how strong and fearless Avery was and how they seemed to be made for them each other. Other thing that made this story so good was the hint of suspense that mixed in really well the story.It also didn't take anything from the story but helped it as well so much so that where the suspense and the romance started and ending it just seemed to blend together and pulled the story together. With that said I want to say thank you to Forever as well NetGalley for letting me read and review it and for sending me a physical copy of .

First off I wanted to thank the publishers Cherry Tree Publishing as well as NetGalley for letting me read and review it, because by the title alone I would have picked it up to read anyway. Right from the very start your  throwing into the story and after that you don't want to stop reading .

Its fast paced , great character development, good plot. And will i didn't like any of the characters they brought the story to life with their lies and secrets .And it'll put you through the ringer with the ups and downs the author mixes in with this one story.

Mentioning her lips had to have been some kind of tactic. Just the word—lips—had him remembering their shape and size, the way the bottom one was so much plumper than the top, how good they felt when pressed against his bare skin. She always warned him to scrub hard before he met up with any other women, since she left a trail of lipstick all over his body.

 

He wasn’t seeing any other women, but there was no way he was telling her that. She already had him under her spell. He didn’t need to be under her power as well.

“Thank you for the offer,” he said tightly. “But I already like—”

“—the one you can’t have,” Dawn finished for him. She was definitely closer now, the unmistakable nonscent of her mixing with the hay and dirt to whirl his senses. “That seems to be a sort of thing with you, doesn’t it?”

He ran his hands through his hair, since it seemed suddenly important that he do something with them. It was also important to do something with this situation. If he let her continue like this, unchecked and uninhibited, there was good chance neither one of them was getting any work done today.

“As I recall, I’ve had you plenty of times already,” he said, a challenge in his voice. “In fact, I bet I could have you right here and now.”

Adam didn’t know if he was the one who’d drawn closer to her or if she’d stepped up to him, but there was no longer anything between them. Not a puppy, not air, definitely not common sense. The jut of her breasts pressed softly against his chest, the toes of her shoes touching the tips of his work boots.

His hands suddenly decided they had minds of their own. Moving forward to clasp her around the waist, they touched silky fabric and heat and a patch of skin where her shirt didn’t quite reach her waistband. That alone should have been enough to stop him—what kind of a person wore a tiny, silken shirt to a working ranch?—but of course he didn’t. That touch of skin set off something inexplicable inside him.

It always did. That was the problem. Words could be ignored and the sound of her laughter pressed deep down inside him, but one graze of his fingertips on her body and he was lost.

“I’ve always wanted to have sex on a pile of hay,” Dawn said, calling his bluff. She arched into his touch, allowing his hand to slide up her back. He encountered nothing but soft skin and the gentle curve of her spine, both of which promised more of the same, should he give in and really cop a feel. Which was tempting for a lot of reasons, including the fact that Dawn was stacked in ways that seemed wholly against nature. “Surely there must be one or two of those in the barn we could try?”

“There are.” He brought his lips close to her ear, though he was careful not to press against the gently pounding pulse below it. The moment the kissing started, all other bets were off—

 

including the one that had a Great Dane puppy at their feet and a golden retriever puppy napping under Phoebe’s desk. That was the one thing he knew for sure. Dawn had come out here with the sole intention of luring him into lowering his defenses, in using her incredible body and the promise of what it could do to get her own way. She wanted Methuselah, and she’d stop at nothing to get her.

Well, two could play that way. In fact, he was becoming something of an expert at this particular game.

“We could slip in there right now, and no one would know where we are,” he murmured. Dawn arched her neck to give him better access, but he didn’t kiss, didn’t touch. Only teased. “I could throw you into the biggest stack of hay and rip this tiny scrap of a shirt from your body.”

A slight, guttural sound indicated how much she liked the direction this conversation was going. Typical. With Dawn, the anticipation, the clandestine nature of their meetings, was half the fun.

Who was he kidding? Where that woman was concerned, it was probably all the fun.

“No one will think to look for us for hours,” he added, still in that low, crooning voice. “It’ll just be me and you, our bodies slick with sweat.”

Dawn’s hips pressed against his, her arms coiling around his neck so that her entire body could melt against him. This was how she always struck, coiled and soft and yielding.

So he struck back.

“Well, that and the snakes.”

Instead of pulling back, Dawn only laughed and clasped her hands tighter around his neck. “Good thing I happen to like snakes,” she said. Her mouth brushed lightly against his, fluttering like a pair of butterfly wings. “Like the alligators, they make such nice shoes. Purses too.”

Even though Adam’s body thrummed with anticipation, burning hot in all the places it touched hers, he kept his tone level. “We also get the occasional badger, even though they’re pretty rare in these parts. Rats are almost a certainty.”

“Why, Adam Dearborn, are you trying to sweet-talk me?”

No, dammit. He was trying to do the exact opposite. Why did this woman refuse to act like a normal human being? She should run at the mention of rats, not press her hips against his until he ached.

“I’m just making sure you know what you’re getting into, that’s all,” he said. His voice

sounded strained to his own ears. “Things can get pretty nasty out here in the wilderness.”

“That’s funny,” she purred. “So can I.”

Would I recommend it? Yes ,in fact I've already started telling some of my friends 

about it.

Would I read more of this series? Yes

Would I read more by this author? Yes

For a second book in a series it was way better then the first one , it started out strong and kept going and not once did I want to put it down. It kept me guessing on who took five-year-old Emma, and there was times I thought that someone in her family might have been the one, I loved the twist and turns and every time I thought I had it figured out I was wrong, as for the characters there was a few that I didn't like and couldn't stand but then there was ones I did like,I especially loved seen the relationships grew between some of the characters. And the interaction between them as well , with that said I would love to say thanks to MIRA as well as NetGalley for letting me read and review it as well as for inventing me to do so. And I can't wait to read more of this series

With a week’s worth of mail in one hand, A.L. McKittridge unlocked his apartment door with the
other. Then he dragged his carry-on suitcase inside, almost tripping over Felix, who had uncharacteristically

free weekly newspapers onto his kitchen table and bent down to scratch his cat. “You must have missed me,”
he said. “Wasn’t Rena nice to you?”
His partner had sent a text every day. Always a picture. Felix eating. Felix taking a dump. Felix giving
himself a bath. No messages. Just visual confirmation that all was well while he was off in sunny California,
taking a vacation for the first time in four years.
I can take care of your damn cat, she’d insisted. And while he hadn’t wanted to bother her because
she’d have plenty to do picking up the slack at work, she was the only one he felt he could ask. His ex-wife
Jacqui would have said no. His just turned seventeen-year-old daughter, Traci, would have been willing but he

Now he had groceries to buy and laundry to do. It was back to work tomorrow. He grabbed the handle
of his suitcase and was halfway down the hall when his cell rang. He looked at the number. Rena. Probably
wanted to make sure he was home and Felix-watch was over. “McKittridge,” he answered.
“Where are you?”
“Home.”
“Oh, thank God.”
He let go of his suitcase handle. Something was wrong. “What’s up?” he asked.
“We’ve got a missing kid. Five-year-old female. Lakeside Learning Center.”
Missing kid. Fuck. He glanced at his watch. Just after 6:00. That meant they had less than two hours
of daylight left. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

The Lakeside Learning Center on Oak Avenue had a fancier name than building. It was a two-story
building with brown clapboard siding on the first floor and tan vinyl siding on the second. There wasn’t a lake
in sight.

The backyard was fenced with something a bit nicer than chain link but not much. Inside the fence
was standard playground equipment: several small plastic playhouses, a sandbox on legs and a swing set. The
building was located at the end of the block in a mixed-use zone. Across from the front door and on the left
were single-person homes. To the right, directly across Wacker Avenue, was a sandwich shop, and kitty-corner
was a psychic who could only see the future on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
A.L. took all this in as he beached his SUV in a no parking zone. Stepped over the yellow tape and
made a quick stop to sign in with the cop who was at the door.

Once he was inside, his first impression was that the inside was much better than the outside. The
interior had been gutted, erasing all signs that this had once been the downstairs of a 1960s two-story home.
There was a large open space to his right. On the far wall hung a big-screen television and on the wall directly
opposite the front door were rows of shelves, four high, stacked with books, games and small toys.
It was painted in a cheery yellow and white and the floor was a light gray tile. There was plenty of
natural light coming through the front windows. The hallway he was standing in ran the entire length of the
building and ended in a back door.
There was a small office area to his left. The door was open and there was a desk with a couple guest
chairs. The space looked no bigger than ten feet by ten feet and was currently empty.
He sent Rena a text. Here.
A door at the far end of the hallway opened and Rena and a woman, middle-aged and white, dressed
in khaki pants and a dark green button-down shirt, appeared. Rena waved at him and led the woman in his
direction. “This is my partner, Detective McKittridge,” she said to the woman. She looked at A.L. “Alice
Quest. Owner and director of Lakeside Learning Center.”
A.L. extended a hand to the woman. She shook it without saying anything.
“If you can excuse us,” Rena said to the woman. “I’d like to take a minute and bring Detective
McKittridge up to speed.”
Alice nodded and stepped into the office. She pulled the door shut but not all the way. Rena motioned
for A.L. to follow her. She crossed the big room and stopped under the television.
“What do we have?” he asked.
“Emma Whitman is a five-year-old female who has attended Lakeside Learning Center for the last
two years. Her grandmother, Elaine Broadstreet, drops her off on Mondays and Wednesdays between 7:15 and
7:30.”
Today was Wednesday. “Did that happen today?”
“I have this secondhand, via her son-in-law who spoke to her minutes before I got here. It did.”
The hair on the back of A.L.’s neck stood up. When Traci had been little, she’d gone to day care. Not
at Lakeside Learning Center. Her place had been bigger. “How many kids are here?” he asked.
“Forty. No one younger than three. No one older than five. They have two rooms, twenty kids to a
room. Threes and early fours in one room. Older fours and fives in the other. Two staff members in each room.
So four teachers. And a cook who works a few hours midday. And then there’s Alice. She fills in when a staff
member needs a break or if someone is ill.”
Small operation. That didn’t mean bad. “Where are the other staff?”
“Majority of the kids get picked up by 5:30. According to Alice, she covers the center by herself from
5:30 to 6:00 most days to save on payroll costs. Emma Whitman is generally one of the last ones to be picked
up. Everybody else was gone tonight and she’d already locked the outside door around 5:45 when the father
pulled up and pounded on the door. At first, she assumed that somebody else had already picked up Emma.
But once Troy called his wife and the grandmother, the only other people allowed to pick her up, she called

Kara Wiese, one of Emma’s teachers, who said that Emma hadn’t been there all day. That was the first time
Alice had thought about the fact that the parents had not reported an absence. She’d been covering for an ill
staff member in the classroom that Emma is not assigned to.”

Would I read more of the series ?Yes, because I already book one and was hooked. 

Would I read more by of this author? Yes

First off I want to thank Berkley Publishing Group for once again letting me revisit  Alaska's Grizzly Harbor and the men who defend the town as well as the people and as well as met their forever loves. IN this one we get to meet  Caradine and see more of 
Isaac as well as get more of their background stories. The one of the things I loved about the two main characters was their inter acting between the two as well as well as the inter acting between Issac and his group of men that was more like family then anything else. Other thing I loved was how  the descriptions and how you get such a sense of the locale, the family feel of the town, and the business.And with each turn of the page I wanted more of the story,because it  had me on the edge of my set, completely lost in the story and I couldn't put it down if I wanted to. With that said I also want to thank NetGalley for letting me read and review it as well.

First off I want to thank the publisher for inviting me to read and review this, especially since this is a new to me author and this is one type of romance I love to read which is male/male.Another thing I liked about this is besides it been a romance and a male with male at ,is how the author talks about have the different types of anxiety as well as attacks, and how the characters Summer and Fox talks about them , and even though Summer has trouble with them he still want to help the students even if its only by talking to them one on one , another thing I liked about this story was how much Summer comes into himself and how Fox comes to understand that its ok for him to love someone and be loved back, and while its a slow building romance , it works well for this story because it makes the characters seem more real, and the author brings the story to life as well by mentioning what I listed above. “Extinguisher first, then sand,” the voice ordered. “Dr. Liu, if you insist on getting in the way,
at least make yourself useful and remove anything else flammable from the vicinity of the blaze.
Quickly, now. Keep your mouths covered.”
Summer’s entire body tingled, prickled, as if his skin had drawn too tight. That voice—that
voice brought back too many memories. Afternoons in his psychology elective class, staring
down at his textbook and doodling in his notebook and refusing to look up, to look at anyone,
while that voice washed over him for an hour. Summer knew that voice almost better than the
face attached to it, every inflection and cadence, the way it could command silence with a quiet
word more effectively than any shout.
And how sometimes it seemed more expressive than the cold, withdrawn expression of the
man he remembered, standing tall and stern in front of a class of boys who were all just a little
bit afraid of him.
Summer had never been afraid, not really.
But he hadn’t had the courage to whisper to himself what he’d really felt, when he’d been a
hopeless boy who’d done everything he could to be invisible.
Heart beating harder, he followed the sound of that voice to the open doorway of a smoke-
filled room, the entire chemistry lab a haze of gray and black and crackling orange; from what he
could tell a table was…on fire? Or at least the substance inside a blackened beaker was on fire,
belching out a seemingly never-ending, impossible billow of smoke and flame.
Several smaller fires burned throughout the room; it looked as though sparks had jumped to
catch on notebooks, papers, books. Several indistinct shapes alternately sprayed the conflagration
with fire extinguishers and doused it with little hand buckets of sand from the emergency kit in
the corner of the room, everyone working clumsily one-handed while they held wet paper towels
over their noses and mouths with the other.
And standing tall over them all—several teachers and older students, it looked like—was the
one man Summer had returned to Omen to see.
Professor Iseya.
He stood head and shoulders above the rest, his broad-shouldered, leanly angular frame as
proud as a battle standard, elegant in a trim white button-down tucked into dark gray slacks,
suspenders striping in neat black lines down his chest. Behind slim glasses, his pale, sharply
angled gray eyes flicked swiftly over the room, set in a narrow, graceful face that had only
weathered with age into an ivory mask of quiet, aloof beauty.
The sleek slick of his ink-black hair was pulled back from his face as always—but as always,
he could never quite keep the soft strands inside their tie, and several wisped free to frame his
face, lay against his long, smooth neck, pour down his shoulders and back. He held a damp paper
towel over his mouth, neatly folded into a square, and spoke through it to direct the frazzled-
looking group with consummate calm, taking complete control of the situation.
And complete control of Summer, as Iseya’s gaze abruptly snapped to him, locking on him
from across the room. “Why have you not evacuated?” Iseya demanded coldly, his words

Summer dropped his eyes immediately—habit, staring down at his feet. “Oh, um—I came to
help,” he mumbled through the collar of his shirt.
A pause, then, “You’re not a student. Who are you?”

But then it had been seven years, he’d only been in two of Iseya’s classes…and he’d changed,
since he’d left Omen.
At least, he hoped he had.
